Benefits of Jumping Rope
Remember how you used to jump rope as a child? Well, there is plenty of evidence to support that, as an adult, there is much to be gained by jumping rope again. While you may have participated in some jump rope as a child, that was probably just for fun. As an adult, you can still have fun but the act of jumping rope is more of a cardiovascular exercise. If you're looking for easy cardio that can be done indoors or outdoors, is lightweight and portable, is simple to use and actually works, jump rope might be for you.
As you will discover when picking up the rope again is that this exercise is harder than it looks. Most adults in reasonable shape get winded after only a few minutes of jumping or skipping rope. It is a perfect way to interval train, for example do three minutes of jump rope, then walk in place, then three more minutes of jump rope, etc. Jump rope can also be alternated with flexibility workouts like yoga and Pilates or with strength training. And don't think jump rope is just for the ladies, either. It is a very popular exercise with men also.
Many professional boxers jump rope as a big part of their training regimen. This is because it quickens feet movements, improves coordination and burns fat all at the same time. You are working your upper and lower body at the same time just by swinging and hopping or skipping. You can even get jump ropes with extra weight added to them to add difficulty and strength train while doing your cardio. There are all kinds of ropes on the market, including beaded, braided, leather, speed ropes and more.
There are many benefits of jumping rope. As mentioned before, it is both an inside and outside activity that can be taken wherever you go. It is important to protect feet and ankles with athletic shoes before participating. And, it is a wise idea to consult with your doctor to ensure you are healthy enough to undertake a new cardiovascular training regimen. This exercise does put impact on hips, knees and ankles but less so than jogging or running. Jump rope can be very tiring depending on what kind of rope you use and how long you jump. Start off slow, and work your way up to longer durations. This will help you build stamina without overexertion.
