How to Jump Rope

You may have learned to jump rope as a child and really loved it. However, if you haven't done this activity in awhile, you may find your skills rusty as an adult. It is easy to jump and skip rope when the right techniques are used. The first thing you need is a jump rope, of course. Jump ropes for adults are quite different from jump ropes for kids. While children's jump ropes are often found in the toy section, adult jump ropes can be found in athletic stores, online and in sporting goods departments.

The next thing you'll need to know about the different types of jump ropes available. The least expensive and most accessible kind is the woven fabric rope. It's not the fastest jump rope out there, but it works well for beginners. If it's speed you want, consider a plastic speed rope. These allow you to jump faster than other ropes. Beaded ropes are also recommended for beginners, they are somewhere in between a fabric rope and a speed rope. Leather ropes are more expensive but also may last longer than the other types of jump ropes available. Also, pick up an exercise mat made for aerobics or jumping rope to minimize bodily impact.

Once you get home with your equipment, you are ready to start. You can jump rope indoors or outdoors, either way you should use the mat. This lessens the strain on hips and knees which are problem areas for some individuals. Jumping rope is easier on these parts of the body than jogging. It is also a major cardiovascular workout. And, it works your arms and legs because you are swinging the rope then jumping. There are weighted ropes available for those who want a more challenging upper body workout.

How to jump rope is easy. Make sure your rope is the right size (the handles should stretch to your underarms when you stand on the middle of the rope.) Then, simply practice swinging the rope around your body and step over it a few times to get the feel for the mechanics. Next you are ready to try a real jump. Swing the rope, and jump over it with both feet. To skip rope, jump with one foot at a time which is somewhat like jogging over the rope. There are more specialized moves, like jumping twice on one rotation, for example. However these can be learned once basic techniques are mastered.
