Types of Jump Ropes
Most people are surprise to learn that there are many types of jump ropes. More than just an activity that is fun for children, jumping rope provides a cardiovascular workout for adults whose doctor has given them the OK to begin a strenuous exercise program. When beginning with jump rope it is important to start slow and work your way up to longer durations, three minutes of jumping is enough to make most people quite winded. Rather than just jumping rope, take breaks in between to do other exercises. This is called interval training -- alternating high impact cardio with other exercises like walking, yoga, Pilates or weights for example.
Before running out to buy the first jump rope you find, read on to learn more about the different kinds and the main qualities of each. No matter what kind you select, the handles of the rope should be adjusted to reach the underarm area for the correct length. One type of rope is the woven jump rope. These are the most traditional of all ropes and can be made from a variety of different textiles. While good for beginners, they are not ideal for outdoor use and tend to wear out more easily than some of the other types.
Beaded ropes, also known as segmented jumping ropes, are excellent for all skill levels. They are strong, durable and easy to find in sporting goods stores. You might also want to check out the leather jumping ropes also. Leather is a sturdy material and makes a good material for this purpose. However, they might not be the best choice for beginners as they are usually the most expensive and can sting the skin if impact at high speed occurs.
Speed jump ropes are just that -- ropes made for speed jumping. They are as suitable for children as they are for boxers training for a match. These ropes are crafted from plastic and usually last quite awhile. If you buy a speed rope that is too long for you, it is possible to shorten the rope by tying knots at the ends. This may not be the most appealing option but it works. Now that you know all about the different kinds of ropes, you are ready to buy a jump rope and join in on this fun exercise craze.
